History

State Highway 9 was authorized in 1920 and 1933.

The route is also the original alignment of U.S. Highway 75 between State Highway 200 and U.S. Highway 2.

The original terminus of Highway 9 was at Doran. The section of Highway 9 north of Breckenridge was originally designated State Highway 82 until the late 1950s.

Between U.S. Highway 12 to an old alignment of U.S. Highway 71 at New London, Highway 9 was originally designated State Highway 23 until around 1940, then designated as State Highway 17 until 1963.

The last section of Highway 9 to be paved was the old State Highway 82 section north of Breckenridge, which was paved by 1961.
