The Japanese Buddhist (see Japanese Buddhism) version of the great future Buddha, the Bodhisattva (see Bodhisattva) Maitreya (see Maitreya), is Miroku-bosatsu or, in his future form, Miroku Nyorai. Miroku was a popular figure among early Japanese Buddhists but was somewhat displaced by the Pure Land Buddhist (see Pure Land Buddhism) emphasis on Amida Buddha (see Amida Buddha) and the possibility of the salvation of the individual in the Pure Land (see Pure Land) of the West.
