(b Gospic, 14 Dec 1885; d Zagreb, 16 April 1913). Croatian painter and draughtsman. In 1910 he graduated from the Akademie der Bildenden K?nste, Munich, where he studied under Hugo von Habermann (1849-1929), worked in Paris, then returned home. He explored many styles, experimenting with Impressionism, Pointillism and Expressionism. In contrast to the tonal modelling that was in use at that time, he introduced the technique of confronting planes of clear colour with a specific colour range. He thus set an important example that helped to make him a mythical figure in Croatian art. He also became known for his drawings of grotesque or erotic characters, in the manner of Aubrey Beardsley.
