Mishakal is the goddess of healing in the fictional Dragonlance setting[1], first true god (of good) introduced in the roleplaying modules[2] as well as the novels[3].
Contents |
Divine status
She was the goddess that restored knowledge of the true gods to Krynn after the Cataclysm. She is the patron of healing, hearth, love and motherhood.
Mishakal was the wife of Paladine and she is the mother of the twins Kiri-Jolith and Habbakuk, as well as Solinari and Mina (Dragonlance)[4]. Mishakal has been the chief god of good ever since her husband Paladine chose mortality at the end of the War of Souls[5].
She has constantly been opposed to all evil gods, especially Takhisis before her demise. As a goddess of life and healing, she is fundamentally opposed to Chemosh and Morgion, who destroy life as the respective masters of (un)death and disease[6].
Followers and clergy
Clerics of Mishakal were the most numerous of the clerics before the Cataclysm[1], and Mishakal was the most beloved god by the common people. She brought back the gift of divine healing to the world by giving the power first to Riverwind (through the Blue Crystal Staff) and then to Goldmoon [2][3]
Goldmoon
As the first true cleric of Good during the War of the Lance, Goldmoon convinced the people of the return of the gods [7].
She was later named Prophet of Mishakal, head of her Holy Order[6].
Throughout the Age of Mortals, Goldmoon, as First Master of the Citadel of Light[8], kept the memory of Mishakal alive in mystics and common people alike so that when the gods returned at the end of the War of Souls[9], many former mystics converted to Mishakal's worship[6].
Fabled artifacts
Blue Crystal Staff
Mishakal's Blue Crystal Staff was a proof of the existence, and return, of the Gods of Good during the War of the Lance[3]. The staff was said to enable good-hearted wielders to perform miracles of healing and protection.
Mishakal had Riverwind take the staff from Xak Tsaroth, where it was guarded by the female black Dragon, Onyx also known as Khisanth. The staff teleported Goldmoon and Riverwind to safety when they were stoned by their fellow tribesmen[10]. It was later used by Goldmoon to kill Onyx.
After the War of the Lance, the staff was once again kept in Xak Tsaroth.
Disks of Mishakal
Written on several indestructible platinum disks are the teachings of Mishakal known as the Disks of Mishakal[1]. These were part of the dragon Khisanth's hoard in the broken city of Xak Tsaroth. They were later rescued by the Companions who presented them to Elistan, who would become Chosen Prophet of Paladine, head of the Holy Orders of Good.
The disks were kept in the Temple of Paladine, in Palanthas, where only good-hearted folk may read them - others receive quite a shock if they try to even touch the holy relic.[1]
Titles and Symbols
Mishakal is also called Healing Hand, Blue Lady, Bearer of Life, Light Bringer, Healer in the Home, Empress, Ke-en, Ka-Mel-Sha, Meshal, Mesalax, Quen Illumni, Quensti Pah, Skymistress and arguably Elir-Sana in Khur. Before the fall of Paladine, she was referred to as the Blue Lady[1] and has since been known as the White Lady[4].
Her symbol is the sign for infinity (
[6]), and she can be viewed in the night sky over Krynn as the constellation known as Infinity[10].
