A short mass. The term was in use byc 1500, and more widely after 1560, for a brief setting of the Ordinary. It is also used for 17th- and 18th-century settings of the first two sections only (Kyrie and Gloria) of the Mass Ordinary.

Ballet in eleven parts with choreography by Limón, music by Kodály, and designs by Ming Cho Lee. Premiered 11 Apr. 1958 by the Limón company at the Juilliard Dance Theater in New York, with Limón, Currier, and B. Jones. The ballet, set to Kodály's Missa Brevis in tempore belli, tells of a man's desperate struggle for survival in the midst of chaos. It was taken into the Alvin Ailey repertoire in 1973.
