Missouri has come a long way since its first byway, Three Notch Road, was built in 1735, and MoDOT has had a lot to do with the progress. The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) overseas one of the nation's largest state highway systems. Specifically, it designs, builds, and maintains the 32,000-plus miles of highway and some 10,000 bridges, and administers federal and state programs that affect public transit and air, water, and rail transportation throughout the state. MoDOT is governed by the six-member Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission. The agency that became MoDOT got its start when the Missouri Legislature established a job for a state highway engineer in 1907.
