1. Australia (Queensland): a town and a river named in 1845 after Sir Thomas Mitchell (1792–1855), surveyor general for New South Wales from 1828 who conducted four expeditions into the interior of Australia in 1831–47.
2. USA (North Carolina): a mountain previously called Black Dome, it was renamed after Professor Elisha Mitchell, who surveyed it, died on it, and is buried at the summit.
3. USA (South Dakota): founded in 1879 and named after Alexander Mitchell, president of the Chicago, Milwaukee, and St Paul Railroad.
