1811The Asylum; or, Alonzo and Melissa. A gothic tale set during the Revolution, in which Melissa's father keeps her from her love, Alonzo, because he is poor. The two overcome great adversity, including the false report of Melissa's death and Alonzo's capture by the British, before they eventually reunite in Charleston. A verbatim plagiarism, attributed to Daniel Jackson (fl. 1790-1811), appears in the same year, titled Alonzo and Melissa; or, The Unfeeling Father. Mitchell died before he could sue for damages.
