US Military Dictionary: Mitsuru Ushijima

Ushijima, Mitsuru (?-1945) commander of Japan's Thirty-Second Army during the bloody battles at Okinawa in the Pacific Theater during World War II, successfully repulsing the U.S. attempts to break through the Machinato Line until late in April 1945. He committed hara-kiri seconds before one of his aides decapitated him when U.S. forces took Okinawa.
