("Appointed Time"). Second Order of the
Mishnah dealing with the laws of the major and minor Jewish
Festivals. Its 12 tractates (Shabbat, Eruvin, Pesaḥim, Shekalim, Yoma, Sukkah, Bétsah, Rosh Ha-Shanah, Ta'Anit, Megillah, Mo'Ed Katan, and
ḥagigah) are arranged in descending order according to number of chapters. The tractates
Shekalim and
Ta'anit are not concerned with festivals, but because they too deal with events that occur at fixed times, they are included in this Order.
Maimonides states that the tractate
Shabbat begins the Order because it is the most frequent festival, occurring once every seven days. Every tractate in this Order is expanded upon in both the Babylonian and the Jerusalem Talmud (except for
Shekalim, which is covered only in the Jerusalem Talmud) and the
Tosefta.
