This album contains a fine straight-ahead set featuring tenor saxophonist Charlie Rouse (who had long had an immediately recognizable tone) in a quartet with pianist Hugh Lawson, bassist Bob Cranshaw and drummer Ben Riley. Other than Thelonious Monk's "Well You Needn't" and Thad Jones' "A Child Is Born," the material is somewhat obscure (originals by Rouse, Lawson and Shirley Scott) and generally a bit complex, but always swinging. A fine effort. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi
