momentum

1. The amount of motion possessed by a moving object. The linear momentum of a moving body is a product of its mass and velocity: M = mv; where M is linear momentum, m is the mass, and v the velocity of the body. Thus, an object's momentum can be changed by altering either its mass or its velocity. Linear momentum is a vector quantity directed through the body in the direction of motion. See also angular momentum.

2. See psychological momentum.
