having only one husband at a time
In botanical terms, monandrous simply means to have a single stamen. Primitive orchid families display this characteristic, as well as many other families throughout the plant world. Single stamens are usually a display of a relatively primitive plant, most plants have multiple stamens, allowing for more pollen to be produced and a greater reproductive possibility. The stamen is part of the male reproductive system of the plant. The stamen is subdivided into the anther, and the filament. Collectively the male reproductive system is called the androecium. In classifying plants, where the filament attaches is often a characteristic used in determining families.
