| The Gates in Central Park |
Happy birthday to conceptual artist Christo Javacheff, who turns 70 today. Christo and his wife, Jeanne-Claude, have made a specialty out of large, temporary outdoor installations. Some of their works include "Running Fence," a fabric curtain which was strung along more than 24 miles/39 km of Northern California; "Surrounded Islands," for which they wrapped eleven islands in Biscayne Bay in hot-pink fabric; and, most recently, "The Gates," more than 7,500 saffron-colored curtains hung along 23 miles/37 km of walkways in New York's Central Park.
"The great power of the project is that it's absolutely irrational... This is the idea of the project, to put in doubt all the values." — Christo
