Monenna

Monenna (Darerca, Bline) (d. c.518), abbess and foundress of Killeevy (Co. Armagh). She was closely associated with Patrick and Bridget, and founded her nunnery with eight virgins and one widow. The latter's child, Luger, was fostered by her and later became a bishop. Their regime was so poor that they lived at subsistence level. At least one of her community was sent to Whithorn in SW. Scotland, Ninian's foundation, for further monastic formation. Various miraculous powers were claimed for Monenna. Later, she was hopelessly confused with Modwenna of Burtonon‐Trent by hagiographers.
