A mongoose is a species of carnivorous mammal. There are two types:
The Herpestidae, the group to which, until recently, all mongooses belonged;
The Galidiinae, or "Malagasy Mongooses", of Madagascar, which were reclassified from the Herpestidae to the Malagasy Carnivore group in 2006.
