Influential Portuguese filmmaker Monique Rutler has been active in cinema since the mid-'70s. Born and raised in France, she emigrated to Portugal in 1969 following her marriage. In the early '70s, Rutler attended the Instituto de Novas Profissões and the Escola de Cinema of the Conservatório Nacional, where she studied film direction and film editing. Rutler began working as an editor and assistant director in 1974. In 1979, Rutler directed the pseudo-documentary Velhos São os Trapos/Like Old Rags for television.
