The Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters is an annual tennis tournament for male professional players held in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, France,[1] a commune that borders on Monaco, of which Monte Carlo is the most famous ward. The event is part of the ATP Masters Series on the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Tour. The tournament is played on clay courts. It is currently held every year in the April-May period.

The Monte Carlo tennis championship was first held in 1897. It became an "Open" event in 1969.

2009 Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters

Rafael Nadal won a record fifth consecutive singles title. Only Andy Roddick was missing from the world's top ten players at the clay court season opener in preparation for the French Open, the second Grand Slam tournament of the year.[2]

Unlike other ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournaments, this tournament did not have mandatory player commitment, reflecting the changes made to the 2009 schedule by the Association of Tennis Professionals in 2007.
