In northwest Johnson County, Kansas, Monticello Township is now merged with Lenexa and Shawnee, Kansas.
In 1987, Shawnee annexed land south of 55th to 83rd/79th west to the Kansas River. City size increased to 42 square miles (110 km2).
Before its annexation, Monticello Township was the natural crossroads for fur trading and later westward emigration by wagon.
In 1858, Kansas Territory began attracting many new settlers.
Among them was James Butler ("Wild Bill Hickok"). At the age of 18, he was elected constable of Monticello Township.
