Review

Carla White's third recording (and second for Milestone) features the highly appealing jazz singer tackling a wide variety of superior songs including the swing standard "If Dreams Come True," "You're My Thrill," "For Heaven's Sake," Bob Dorough's "Love Came on Stealthy Fingers" and Charlie Parker's lyrics on his own "Yardbird Suite (What Price Love)." Tenor great Lew Tabackin guests on five songs (one on flute) and guitarist Joshua Breakstone joins the supportive rhythm section (pianist Peter Madsen, bassist Phil Bowler and drummer Tim Horner) for four of the nine selections. Whether scatting or giving the proper amount of emotion to ballads, Carla White by 1988 had emerged as one of the top jazz singers around. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi
