Well, we know that some people believe the moon is made of green cheese and that there's a man in the moon. And we know of those who believe that man never really walked on the moon. On this date in 1835, The New York Sun published the first of six articles claiming that there was life on the moon. In the Great Moon Hoax, Sir John Herschel was supposed to have seen through a "telescope of vast dimensions" planets in other solar systems and life on the moon. He was said to have spotted forests, quartz pyramids, blue unicorns roaming the hilltops and a race of winged humanoids that he dubbed Vespertiliohomo, or "man-bat."
