English family of painters. William Moore (1790-1851) was a provincial portrait painter, and four of his fifteen sons and daughters, of whom (1) Albert Joseph Moore was the youngest, were also artists. Edwin Moore (1813-93) and William Moore jr (1817-1909) were topographical painters working mainly in watercolours. John Collingham Moore (1829-80) painted landscapes and child portraits and worked in Rome with the artistic group known as the ETRUSCAN SCHOOL. Next to Albert, the most talented of the Moore brothers was Henry Moore (1831-95), elected ARA in 1885 and RA in 1893. He had a high reputation in the 19th century for his marine paintings, typically studies of the open seas. Henry was precise in observation of atmosphere and wave form and his work became increasingly bold in execution and colour. The Clearness after Rain (1887; priv. col., see 1978 exh. cat., p. 61) gained him the L?gion d'honneur at the Exposition Universelle of 1889 in Paris.
