moralistes

Term used primarily of 17th- and 18th-century French authors, including La Rochefoucauld and La Bruyère, whose short texts serve to make a moral point, or to encourage self-examination, reflection, and discussion, appropriate to a salon culture. Later moralistes include Diderot, Voltaire, and Montesquieu.
