Review

Like its prequel Cajun Classics, this draws from several decades' worth of material to offer a Cajun anthology that's more diverse and interesting than the norm, including both famed (Nathan Abshire, Balfa Brothers, and Iry LeJeune) and non-famed acts. One of the biggest prizes is Harry Choates' 1946 recording of "Jole Blonde," the most popular version of that Cajun standard, and indeed one of the most popular Cajun records of all time. The disc goes all the way up to 1993 and emphasizes accordion-led ensembles; the Hackberry Ramblers' 1963 track "Cajun Pogo," which has an unusual (and solid) Cajun/New Orleans groove, is a welcome surprise. ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi
