Name loosely applied to south-eastern Wales that has had different definitions at different times. There was a petty kingdom of Morgannwg in pre-Norman Wales, which was sometimes allied to Gwent, its neighbour to the east. In the Mabinogi, Pwyll expands his kingdom by occupying portions of Morgannwg. After the Act of Union with England, 1536, when the region was joined with nearby Gower to form the county of Glamorgan, the name Morgannwg still pertained to the regional literary tradition that flourished, with interruptions, from the 14th century to the time of Iolo Morganwg (1747–1826).
