Mortal Kombat

Games: Mortal Kombat
  • Release Date: 1993
  • Genre: Fighting
  • Style: 2D Fighting

Review: Overall

If you've played Mortal Kombat on the Genesis, then this is really a refresher for you as the Sega CD version is practically identical aside from the full motion video opening and some barely enhanced tunes and sound effects.

So, there's a guy, Shang Tsung and he sponsors this tournament called Mortal Kombat where fighters from all over the world (and sometimes beyond) gather to fight for title of the greatest fighter ever. Anything goes here, punches, kicks, and throws are complemented by magic, teleportation, and otherworldy abilities culminating in the end-of-bout fatality where the unlucky opponent is killed off in a unique fashion by each player.

There's plenty of characters on offer, each unique, creative, and diverse adding up to a fast paced and strategic fight that appeals to most every fighting game fan around. Unlike games like Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat opts for a block button which can be cumbersome but after you adjust to it, you'll be blocking almost more than you'll be hitting.

The CD advantages are really at a loss here. The tunes and effects have barely been upgraded and the only real CD feature is a full motion video opening that is basically a re-edit of the television commercial that Midway released around the time Mortal Kombat was really big.

If you absolutely adore Mortal Kombat or just need a fighting game for your Sega CD and don't mind the lack of CD features then go right ahead. The control is intact and playable, the characters are well represented, and the blood and fatalities remain unhindered, unlike the SNES version.

Review: Enjoyment

It's Mortal Kombat and tons of people find it alarmingly fun. The fun and challenge is captured well, though it doesn't look or sound too good

Review: Graphics

Dithered and generally not as smooth as the arcade counterpart, it's what you'd expect from the Genesis hardware...CD enhancement is practically nonexistant

Review: Sound

Drab tunes and shallow, scratch sound effects make you wonder what you need the CD for!

Review: Replay Value

With all the fighters and the addition of friends to compete against, Mortal Kombat should last you a few solid months

Review: Documentation

Going over each character and a few of their key moves is a nice touch and gets you on your feet and fighting quicker
