Battle of Fort Moultrie

Top

Throughout a ten-hour bombardment on 28 June 1776, Fort Moultrie—a palmetto fort on Sullivan's Island in Charleston Harbor in South Carolina commanded by Col. William Moultrie—successfully beat off a British attack under Sir Henry Clinton and Peter Parker. The American loss was slight, while that of the British, both in lives and damage to ships, was large. The victory kept the British out of the South for the next two years.
