Mountain Climbing Through a Telescope

Plot

Set in the Alps (actually a series of painted backdrops), Pathe's Mountain Climbing Through a Telescope accommodated a near-fatal fall into a yawning chasm, and an exciting rescue, in only six minutes' screen time. Suspense was sustained by constantly cutting back and forth between the endangered mountain climbers and a man and woman witnessing the excitement through a telescope. As a novelty, several scenes were shot from the point of view of the witnesses as they peer through the lens. To create the "feel" of a telescope, certain scenes were framed with a black iris. It is possible that Mountain Climbing Through a Telescope was directed by Edwin S. Porter, but as described by the trade magazine Variety the film seems too imaginative for the prolific but conservative Porter. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
