Review

The All-American Rejects' effervescent 2003 hit "Swing Swing" sounded like a pop-punk adaptation of Better Than Ezra, and their sophomore effort makes this mix even more apparent. The earnest racket of an outfit like the Get Up Kids is also a component in Move Along's sound. But the Rejects blend and sculpt those influences with keyboards, choirs, pianos -- there's even a classical guitar on "Top of the World" -- and the result is superficial midrange pop with appeal for a general audience of casual listeners. (Fans of Wakefield, Something Corporate, Switchfoot, and American Hi-Fi should take note.) The Rejects rock out a little on "Night Drive," "Dirty Little Secret," and "I'm Waiting" -- the guitars crackle anxiously, and Tyson Ritter and Nick Wheeler's breathy harmonies soar like they mean it. There's also distortion somewhere in "Stab My Back," but it's buried under acoustic guitars, vocal overdubs, and mournful keyboards. Move Along has some memorable hooks, such as those on the title track or "Change Your Mind" -- and, living up to its title, it moves along efficiently, usually keeping the pace at a snappy midtempo. The songs are also impeccably arranged, even if they're relentlessly processed and some of the instrumentation seems like overkill. (A children's choir? Come on....) In other words, it's easy to like the All-American Rejects if you're looking for 21st century mainstream rock that takes very, very few chances but does offer solid melodies and easy to swallow take/break and night/flight rhyme schemes. ~ Johnny Loftus, All Music Guide

Move Along is the second studio album by The All-American Rejects, released on July 12, 2005. A deluxe edition was also released in the iTunes Store. The album was certified 2x Platinum in the U.S. (2,000,000 units) on June 6, 2008[1] by the RIAA, and was also certified Platinum in Canada (100,000 units) by the CRIA.

Move Along was on the Billboard 200 for 97 weeks, and debuted at #6 on the chart which would be its peak position. 84 of those 97 weeks the album was still inside the top 100.[2] In UK the album charted below Top 75 for a week in July 2005, peaking at #138[3], before re-entering the chart in February 2005 for further weeks below Top 75. In July 2005, following the success of "Dirty Little Secret" making Top 20 the album finally charted inside the official UK Top 75, as it entered at its #45 peak position.[4]

Production and release

With Move Along, Tyson Ritter and Nick Wheeler spent 10 months writing at their homes in Destin, Florida. The first two tracks on the album, “Dirty Little Secret” and “Stab My Back”, were finished right before they went to Atlanta in October 2004 to finish the other ten tracks with the rest of the band.

A day before U.S. version was released, the UK version of Move Along was released on July 11, 2005. It features two bonus tracks not available on the U.S. version. Also on the iTunes Store a deluxe edition of the album was released featuring five live tracks recorded at the Wiltern Theater at LA, California.

Two B-sides of Move Along, "Kiss Yourself Goodbye" and "Eyelash Wishes", were not made for the final cut of the album. The All-American Rejects, though, took the initiative to record these tracks and co-produced making them along with Mike Plotnikoff and Paul Decarli, the former recording the tracks on Move Along, and the latter was the ProTools editor for the album. Both tracks were featured on the "Move Along" CD single, and "Eyelash Wishes" became a bonus track on the UK version of Move Along.

As well as being released on compact disc, Move Along was released on 12" vinyl. The first 500 copies printed included a black 7" single of "Eyelash Wishes", which had a photo printed on the back side of "Captain" John Jackson, one members of the All-American Rejects' touring crew. A cassette tape of Move Along was also released in Indonesia, with an acoustic version of "Night Drive" as a bonus track.

Singles

The first single from the album, "Dirty Little Secret", was first released to Modern Rock radios on June 6, 2005. It was later released coinciding with Move Along on July 12 to contemporary hit radio. The second single, "Move Along", was released on February 28, 2006, but didn't meet its peak on the charts until summer, with "Dirty Little Secret" still in the spotlight. "Top of the World", a fast-paced alternative rock song, was then released on July 6, 2006, but failed to gather popularity. "It Ends Tonight" was released on September 9, 2006, after "Move Along" was declining in the charts, and became Move Along's third big hit.

Music videos

For all four of the singles released for Move Along, a music video was made for each one, starting with "Dirty Little Secret" released July 11, 2005.[5] The video received a nomination for "Best International Video - Group" from the Canadian music video channel MuchMusic Video Awards. The video for "Move Along" was released on January 18, 2006 [6], which it was nominated for four awards. At the MTV Video Music Awards, it was nominated for "Best Editing" and won "Best Group Video", and at the Music Video Production Association Awards it was nominated for "Best Editing" again, and won "Best Pop Video". The "Top of the World" video was released July 6, 2006, followed by the video for "It Ends Tonight" on August 25.
