Given his young age, Hungarian-born violinist Barnabás Kelemen has seen an almost meteoric rise in prominence not only as a solo performer, but as a pedagogue at some of the world's foremost musical institutions. This two-DVD set of the complete Mozart works for violin and orchestra demonstrates to listeners why this is so. Serving as both soloist and director, Kelemen leads the ideally proportioned Ferenc Erkel Chamber Orchestra in live performances given in the Budapest Palace of Arts. The orchestra's sound possesses an ideal balance of crisp, clean articulation with a warm, well-rounded sound; the players match every aspect of Kelemen's playing -- dynamics, articulation, phrasing -- with stunning attention to detail. Kelemen's understanding of Mozart hints to a wisdom and level of introspection far beyond his years. Outer movements are entirely vivacious, jovial, and impassioned, while inner movements allow listeners to relish in the warm, satisfying melancholy that distinguishes much of Mozart's slow movement writing. The video production of the two DVDs is quite tastefully done, transitioning slowly between different camera angles. The only slight distraction is on Kelemen's face, which is continuously and exceedingly contorting into all manner of bizarre affectations. Beyond this, however, this set offers listeners a highly rewarding collection of these great works. ~ Mike Brownell, All Music Guide
