This Gaumont production was dismissed by the trade magazine Variety as "a long, tedious and gruesome film." Though gravely ill, young Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart feverishly races against time to complete his Requiem. As his strength dwindles, Mozart is terrified by a vision of his own funeral, replete with priest, casket and pall-bearers. Miraculously, he finishes his composition then lapses into a coma. As he breathes his last breath, Mozart is "treated" to a mosaic of scenes from his greatest operas. It is possible that Mozart's Last Requiem was meant to be accompanied by a live orchestral score. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
