The action in John Kendrick Bang's stage play Mrs. Upton's Device was whittled down to a single reel's worth of film in this Vitagraph adaptation. The title character is a chronic do-gooder, who, on this occasion, plots and plans to bring two quarrelsome lovers back together. Through an elaborate ruse, Mrs. Upton arranges for the boy and girl to attended the same stage production of Cavalleria Rusticana. As the strains of the opera's main love song waft their way through the theater, hero and heroine suddenly spot one another seated at opposite sides of the auditorium. Anyone who can't guess what happens next has never seen a movie before. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
