Named 'Mstislav's (Town)' after its founder, Mstislav Vladimirovich (1076–1132), Grand Prince of Kiev (1125–32), whose name comes from the Russian
mstit′ 'to avenge' and
slava 'glory', thus 'Avenging Glory'. He was the eldest son of Grand Prince Vladimir Monomakh and Gytha, the eldest daughter of Harold II, King of England (1066).
