A condition in which mucin is present in the skin in excessive amounts, or in abnormal distribution.

mucinosis
A state with abnormal deposits of mucin in the skin, often associated with hypothyroidism (myxedema).
- follicular m. — see alopecia mucinosa.
- idiopathic m. — see Shar-Pei mucinosis (below).
- Shar-Pei m. — increased amounts of mucin in the dermis is associated with the greatly wrinkled skin which is characteristic of this breed. Called also idiopathic mucinosis.
