(medicine) Accumulations of materials containing mucin or mucinous substances in the skin; sometimes accompanied by papule and nodule formation.


(myū'sə-nō'sĭs)
n.

A condition in which mucin is present in the skin in excessive amounts, or in abnormal distribution.

A state with abnormal deposits of mucin in the skin, often associated with hypothyroidism (myxedema).

  • follicular m. — see alopecia mucinosa.
  • idiopathic m. — see Shar-Pei mucinosis (below).
  • Shar-Pei m. — increased amounts of mucin in the dermis is associated with the greatly wrinkled skin which is characteristic of this breed. Called also idiopathic mucinosis.
