Mudar Badran
1934 -
Prime minister of Jordan 1976 - 1979, 1980 - 1984, and December 1989 - June 1991.
Before becoming prime minister of Jordan in 1976, Mudar Badran had risen through the ranks as a public security (intelligence) officer. He was asked to form a government at a time when security was a high priority in the kingdom. He was known not to be on friendly terms with Syria, even supporting the Muslim Brotherhood rebellion in Syria in 1978 and 1979, and may have been the target of a Syrian-backed assassination attempt. During the 1980s, he supported the development of a close relationship with Iraq. During the Iran - Iraq War of 1980 - 1988, Iraq was given access to the port of Aqaba, providing it with a vital supply line and providing Jordan with the economic benefits that ensued. In December 1989, Badran headed the cabinet formed after the first general elections to be held in Jordan in twenty-two years.
