Review

Many of cornetist Muggsy Spanier's hottest recordings were made during 1944-45. This LP (whose contents are long overdue to be reissued on CD) features the basic but exciting soloist at his best with groups also including Miff Mole or Lou McGarity on trombone, clarinetist Pee Wee Russell, baritonist Ernie Caceres, pianist Gene Schroeder and several overlapping rhythm sections. The 13 jazz standards (which include "Original Dixieland One Step," "I'm Sorry I Made You Cry," "Bugle Call Rag" and "Fidgety Feet") plus Spanier's "Feather Brain Blues" are all given heated treatment, which should greatly please Dixieland fans. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi
