Muhammad Ali Stripped of Title

Top

Apr 30, 1967. Muhammad Ali was stripped of his world heavyweight boxing championship when he refused to be inducted into military service. Said Ali, “I have searched my conscience, and I find I cannot be true to my belief in my religion by accepting such a call.” He had claimed exemption as a minister of the Black Muslim religion. He was convicted of violating the Selective Service Act, but the Supreme Court reversed this decision in 1971.
