It covers a distance of 43 km, covering 27 stations and connects Secunderabad, Nampally, Dabirpura, Malakpet, Falaknuma, Madhapur and Lingampally. The Diesel Multiple Units (green local trains) complement the MMTS (white-blue trains) along few other routes like Bolaram (up to Manoharabad), Umdanagar etc.
These routes are operational (including local trains) and the number of services in that particular route is mentioned below:

In May 2010, Indian Railways decided to take up the 107-km Phase-II project of the MMTS.[1]
On 1 March 2012, the Union Cabinet Committee on Infrastructure approved the upgradation of railway infrastructure for introduction of Phase II of Multi-Modal Transport System (MMTS) in the twin cities. The total expenditure for execution of the Phase II works is
632.68 crore (US$126.22 million). Two-thirds of this --
421.79 crore (US$84.15 million) will be borne by the state and the remaining will be funded from the gross budgetary support of Indian Railways. The state government already gave approval for the Phase II and agreed to finance 65% of the cost of the project.[2]
Phase II has been divided into two stages. Stage 1 is estimated at
317 crore (US$63.24 million). Also, passenger amenities at different stations in the city and more rakes (MMTS coaches) were incorporated in Phase II.
| Stage | Line | Length (km) | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stage I | Falaknuma-Airport | 20 | |
| Tellapur-Patancheru | |||
| Secunderabad-Bolarum | |||
| Sanathnagar-Moula Ali | 21 | ||
| Stage II | Moula Ali-Malkajgiri-Sitaphalmandi | ||
| Bolarum-Medchal | |||
| Moula Ali-Ghatkesar |
On the Tellapur-Patancheru stretch, restoration of tracks and electrification would be taken up, while on the Secunderabad-Bolarum stretch electrification and remodelling of stations would have to be taken up. On the Sanathnagar-Moula Ali, Moula Ali-Malkajgiri-Sitaphalmandi, Bolaram-Medchal stretches, doubling and electrification would be taken up for MMTS connectivity.
The project is slated for completion during three years of the current Five-Year Plan (2012–17).[3]
On International Women's Day 2012, S Satyavati became the first woman loco pilot of South Central Railways when she independently drove an MMTS train. She piloted 'Matrubhumi Ladies Special Train' from Falaknuma to Lingampally suburban stations.[4]
