A resin-based substance extracted from decaying vegetation within marine sediments, found on the shores of the Black Sea. It contains a number of biologically active chemicals, including salicylic acid (related to aspirin), copper, iron, and magnesium compounds. It was used in former times to treat a variety of ailments. Great claims have been made for its healing powers. It was used to treat radiation poisoning following the Chernobyl disaster. It has recently been introduced into the USA where it is rumoured that athletes are taking it to boost their performance and to accelerate recovery times. There is little evidence about its efficacy or safety.
