Yan Kadi Faso consists of bandleader Lassina Coulibaly and six talented West African musicians. Hailing from Burkina Faso and Mali, Lassina Coulibaly and his sextet present nine tasty numbers on this Buda Records release. An eclectic variety of instruments -- including the kora (a 21-stringed harp-lute), fle (a transverse-blown flute), balan (balafon or marimba), and djembe (a single-headed calix-shaped hand drum) -- are utilized by the members of the ensemble in the creation of their tunes. From reticulated kora solos by Djeli Moussa Sissoko to richly embroidered polyphonic and polyrhythmic soundscapes formed by the ensemble as a whole, each track on Musiques Du Burkina Faso and Du Mali offers a spectacular glimpse into the creative acoustic music scene in Mali and Burkina Faso. Lassina Coulibaly & Yan Kadi Faso garner musical inspiration for this project from such West African cultures as the Bambara, Dioula, Gouin, Maninka, Fulani, and Samoro peoples. Overall, Musiques Du Burkina Faso & Du Mali is an inventive production on which Lassina Coulibaly & Yan Kadi Faso successfully coalesce disparate instruments and ethnic sensibilities into cohesive musical works. ~ John Vallier, All Music Guide
