Review

French film enthusiasts -- especially new wave devotees -- will want to pay special attention to this collection of soundtrack music by Turkish-born composer Paul Misraki, authored for the films of Claude Chabrol, Jean-Luc Godard, and Jean-Pierre Melville from the late '50s through the mid-'60s. The mix is a genre-bending selection of films, from thrillers like Chabrol's Les Cousins to the science fiction/comic book-based action of Godard's Alphaville. The music tends to be on the lighter side and very much of a piece with French source music as well as French film music. The stereo separation is nicely discreet, and the sound is crisp enough to make the instrumental timbres part of the appeal of this material. ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi
