Mutant League Hockey

Games: Mutant League Hockey

Game Description

If you like the sport of hockey, this may be the game for you. If you like brutal, over-the-top mayhem and violence, this game may also be the one for you. If you don't like either of these, go put on a pot of tea! Confused? Well, it's time to strap on the skates and grab your chainsaw for Mutant League Hockey on the Genesis. You might never look at the sport in quite the same way again!

Featuring crazy, on-ice antics and bone-crunching (literally!) hits, this game will put new meaning to the phrase "unnecessary roughness." The goal of Mutant League Hockey isn't just to win the game, it's to win the war! You will have a variable armory of weapons to use against your mutant foes as you try and claim the crown of champion. Don't like how your opponent is jawing with you and agitating you whenever you go in for a shot? How about teaching him a lesson with a giant axe or maybe a steel pipe? Or maybe you'll just level him with a sucker-punch as you go down the ice - it's up to you!

Don't worry about the consequences: the referee often turns a blind-eye to your mutant-bashing action! So you can cheat and use any means possible to win the game. Is the goalie being a pest or not letting in any shots? How about firing an exploding puck his way? Also, if your goalie isn't playing the way he should, you can "dispose" and then replace him with a demon net, which stops most everything and can even hurt players. Bribing the referee is possible as well and can suddenly result in penalties called in your favor.

Don't be surprised to see your opponents get charged with "making slushies" or "losing a fight." Each rink is also unique in its own way as well. You will have to watch out for ice pits and mines in some arenas, while others will have divots and shark attacks! Another unique feature is that you can win by making the other team have too many casualties! Just watch as the body count rises and bloody, mutant corpses litter the arena!

The game has several modes of "playhem" for you to enjoy. You can go against a friend in a single, one-on-one match or you can take your own battles into the season mode. To moderate the action, there are several options like difficulty and bloodiness. If you think you're ready, how about taking on the Galaxy Aces in the playoffs? Only those who wield the biggest weapons and have the dirtiest team will win!

Roots & Influences

The coin-op game Arch Rivals helped start the "sports and violence" genre in 1989. Later, Electronic Arts published several NHL hockey titles and decided to make an ultra-violent, over-the-top style of game based on the sport. The Mutant League franchise best exemplified this style of play.

Electronic Arts published Mutant League Football in 1993, which was the first game in the series that would only span two titles. Much like the hockey version, the football game parodied the sport by substituting monsters for players and adding comical violence to spice up gameplay. Both titles were modeled after existing Electronic Arts sports franchises: NHL Hockey and John Madden Football.

Mutant League Hockey is a hockey game that was released in 1994 for the Sega Genesis. It is the spin-off of Mutant League Football. It featured many of the same teams and players but new ones as well.

Unlike Mutant League Football which featured five species of mutant, Mutant League Hockey narrows it down to three: robots, skeletons and trolls. The game is identical in tone to its predecessor, with special plays that can cause things to happen like making the puck explode when it is picked up by an opposing player, bribing the referee to call fake penalties against the other team, and land mines and holes on the ice.

The teams in the game are ranked by a rating of zero through six skulls.

As with Mutant League Football, hazards litter the ice and death is commonplace. Players may substitute their goalie for a demon goalie, a gigantic demon head that takes the place of the net; scoring on a demon goal causes it to explode. In addition, the crowd is prone to throwing weapons or other powerups onto the ice; they may be picked up and used freely. When a player dies, their corpse remains on the ice and may be tripped on; between periods, a giant slug acting as an ice resurfacer eats the debris littering the ice. As in real hockey, fights may break out. Fights in Mutant League Hockey are done as a minigame, where the objective is to knockout the opponent. Both players are still sent to the penalty box, but the player who got knocked out also takes an additional penalty for losing.
