The Muzat River, a tributary of the Tarim River, flows in a steep river valley located north of Kucha in Xinjiang, China. Cut into its walls on its northern bank are 230 caves and grottos, the Kizil Caves archaeological site.[1]
A large, man-made lake has been constructed near the Muzat River Kizil site. It contains 50,000 sq m of water described as "the largest swimming pool" in southern Xinjiang. However, its construction may have destroyed the possibility of future archaeological excavations for the area.[2]
