"My Own Summer (Shove It)" is a single by Sacramento, California-based alternative metal band Deftones; their first to be taken from the album Around the Fur. It was released in 1997 by Maverick Records. This opening track is a definitive fan favourite and a staple of every Deftones concert.[citation needed] It was Deftones' first charting single, reaching number 29 in the UK Singles Chart.[2] A version of the song was featured on the soundtrack of The Matrix. In 2002, Linkin Park performed a cover of My Own Summer in Virginia.[3] British post-hardcore band Fightstar also recorded a cover of the song which was featured on a Kerrang CD release. English alternative rock band Muse have also partially covered it. This has also been covered on many occasions by the British band F3tch who first performed it at the second In-Fest event in London in 2008. Also, it has been covered by American band Gym Class Heroes live.[4]
It was also included on an EP released by Atreyu on October 12, 2010. Travis Miguel (Atreyu), Brandon Bolmer (Chiodos), Jono Evans (Endless Hallway), Marc McKnight (Atreyu), Sam Carter (Architects), and Tanner Wayne (Chiodos) collaborated on this cover.
The video, directed by Dean Karr,[5] begins with a clip of a cage falling into the sea, blood seeping out of it into the surrounding waters. It then moves to footage of the band playing on a set of floating anti-shark cages. Eventually, a shark appears and is seen to be eating a piece of meat, presumably the contents of the cage. At the end of the video, Moreno falls into the water and the video fades out.
On the B-Sides & Rarities DVD, there is an interview with Moreno that takes place during the filming of the video.
All tracks written by Deftones. All lyrics by Chino Moreno, except "My Own Summer (Shove It)" and "Lotion", by Chino Moreno and Deftones.
The live tracks on both CDs were recorded live at the Melkweg, Amsterdam, on October 13, 1997.[6][7]
