also my·e·li·na·tion (-nā'shən)The development of a myelin sheath around motor neurones. Myelination improves the conduction speed of nerve impulses, enabling fast reactions and skilled movements to occur. Myelination of fibres in the cortex of the brain occurs most rapidly during childhood, but continues until well after puberty. A motor skill can only become fully developed after maturity, when myelination of the nervous system is completed.
The acquisition, development, or formation of a myelin sheath around a nerve fiber.
