Myfanwy Piper
Myfanwy Evans, Mary Piper
(b London, 1911; d Fawley Bottom, Kent, 1997). Eng. librettist. Married John Piper (1903–92), the artist and scenic designer, in 1935. Wrote libs. for three Britten operas: The Turn of the Screw (1954, based on Henry James), Owen Wingrave (1971, also Henry James), and Death in Venice (1973, based on Thomas Mann). For Hoddinott she wrote What the Old Man Does is Always Right (1977), The Rajah's Diamond (1979), and The Trumpet Major (1981, based on Thomas Hardy).
