(b Kremenets, 20 Nov 1896; d Kiev, 14 June 1962). Ukrainian composer and conductor. A pupil of Yavorsky at the Kiev Conservatory, where he taught from 1946, he conducted operas at Kiev (1926-8) and Khar′kov (1928-35). His works include ballets, oratorios, orchestral music and songs in a nationalist style; his Pan Kanyovsky was the first Ukrainian ballet.
