The Myrtle Beach Thunderboltz are an ECHL team set to begin play for the 2008-09 season. YRT2 Arena is currently under construction in Conway, South Carolina to accommodate them and to provide a new basketball arena for the Coastal Carolina University Chanticleers. There are some questions as to whether the team will be called the Thunderboltz when they finally return to the ECHL.

The franchise was previously known as the Knoxville Cherokees and Pee Dee Pride. The Pride suspended its franchise following the 2004-05 season, expecting to return to play in the 2006-07 season in Myrtle Beach. Construction delays on YRT2 Arena have pushed the franchise's return to the 2008-09 season. At this time, the ECHL hockey team to be based out of the YRT2 Arena has not been named.

The tentative Thunderboltz name and logo features an A-10 Thunderbolt, in reference to the planes which once flew on the runways of the old Air Force Base on the site of the present Myrtle Beach International Airport.
