Nügua (Nu-kua or Nüwa), is the great Mother Goddess of Chinese mythology (see Chinese Deities). The sister-wife of the August emperor-god Fuxi (see Fuxi, see Chinese Emperors), she was a serpent figure, capable of changing shapes at will, who is said to have created the first humans out of yellow soil and mud, the yellow soil forming aristocrats, the mud the lower orders. It was Nügua who defeated the Black Dragon, Gonggong (see Gonggong) and repaired the sky after he had removed one of its support pillars.
