(Pāli, mindfulness of the breath). One of the oldest and most basic meditation techniques for attaining dhyāna or trance. The technique involves merely paying attention to the movement and duration of the breath in the course of inhalation and exhalation. It is the preliminary exercise in establishing the four Foundations of Mindfulness (smṛti-upasthāna).
